Cambridge Flood Insurance
Of all the types of disasters that can occur in the United States, flooding is ranked as the #1 disaster, as reported by FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency).
Flood insurance is an essential policy to carry in order to protect your home, especially if you live in a high- or medium-risk flood zone. Standard homeowners and renters insurance does not cover flood damage.
We’ve seen all too well in recent years how devastating hurricanes and tropical storms can be, even in a northern state like Massachusetts. Damage caused by snow melting, flooding & rainwater is not covered by homeowners policies, so a flood insurance policy is necessary for this crucial coverage. In addition, sea levels are rising across the world, and the waters of the Atlantic, from north of Boston all the way to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina are rising at a rate that is 3 to 4 times faster than it is rising globally, according to federal scientists.
Flood insurance policies are written by the U.S. federal government through FEMA, but they are sold and serviced by licensed agents and companies, such as Econosurance. Flood insurance is available for renters as well as homeowners. You will be required to get flood insurance by your mortgage company if you live in a designated flood zone. But flooding often occurs outside of designated flood zones…such as inland areas and away from major waterways and rivers. You should consider buying a flood insurance policy if there is the potential that your house could be flooded by melting snow, an overflowing creek or pond or water running down a steep hill. And don’t expect to obtain a policy the day before the weather forecast so advises…..there is a 30-day waiting period before the coverage takes
(Recent changes in Massachusetts will allow homeowners to purchase flood insurance just on the outstanding balance on their mortgage. Previously, creditors could require homeowners to buy flood insurance up to the value of the property.) Homeowners won’t also be forced to purchase flood insurance that covers the contents of their home. Policies will also be barred from having deductibles less than 5,000 dollars. These changes were put into effect to make Flood Insurance more affordable to all Massachusetts residents
Currently there are more than 660,000 flood insurance policies in force in the State of Massachusetts. This figure has steadily increased over the decades as new buildings are construced and as the local population grows. It is not hard to understand why more families and business owners are purchasing flood insurance to help safeguard their homes and businesses.
